My practicum role is the co-president of the HWS health professions club. Before my senior year, I worked as the treasurer for the club. I realized that attendance is an issue. People are not willing to join the events or the regular meetings. So when I become the co-president, I want to bring changes to the club.

It is really important because the events themselves are beneficial. Students can get important information about the career path they choose. These events help them to have a better focus and make them more well rounded. In addition, having a good turnout is a sign of having a good community. This impression will stay in the speakers’ mind. This is really important, especially for the admission officers. If they have a good impression about HWS students, they will more likely to accept our students. I am working with the other co-president, Andrew Baird. We tried to announce the events early on. And we also created a facebook page, which is more direct for a lot of students. Also, besides inviting the admission officers, we also invite students back. Having an alumnus giving a talk is different than having an admission officer giving a talk. Student perspectives are more interesting and tend to attract more people. We also hold field trips to medical school. We had good turnout for it.

I think the most important thing I learn through this leadership role is how to better bring change to a community, in this case our club. I think it will benefit me in a long run because I still have 4 years of medical school. I may become an officer for some organizations. With this leadership position, I now know how to better lead a group.
